C-stores in the future
We are deeply committed to the convenience store market. All of our real estate holdings and business ventures revolve around convenience stores. Therefore, I always wonder where the c-store market is heading in the future. This level of analysis and contemplation not only helps our business today but it allows us to scale for the future.
I believe there are five trends we should be tracking for future developments in our market.
- More automation and customer self-service
Have you walked into a Racetrac lately? There are more unmanned self-service POS systems in the store than there are employees. This trend is here to stay, in my opinion. It’s cheaper to invest upfront in high-end POS systems than recruiting, training, and retaining employees. Racetrac and other big national brands are testing the limits of self-checkout and other QR code-enabled systems to increase efficiency and profitability.
- Food, food, and more food
QT, Racetrac, Wawa look more like QSRs than they doc-stores. The plethora of food options available in these stores is mind-boggling, but this trend will not be flattening. People are busier, more mobile, and are looking for efficient ways to get high-quality food at cost-effective prices. They don’t have time to sit and eat. Let’s grab n go without fuss.
- Private Labels
QT is the leader in private labeled food and product options inside of their stores. The rest of the industry is catching up but will continue to develop more private label options. From mobile electronic accessories to grab-n-go, look for private labels all over the c-store world.
- Sustainability in grab n go.
C-stores are often laggards when it comes to innovation; however, as customer expectations evolve around sustainability and food, so will their desire to buy food in environmentally friendly packaging.
- Beyond Gasoline
As the roads get more populated with electric cars, the gas station will turn into an “energy” station where gas and electric options will be available to the valued customer.
